Routine Immunization Programme

Background

Immunization saves millions of lives every year from a wide range of diseases. The Government of India, working together with international partners including UNICEF, WHO, World Bank and Rotary International is scaling up efforts to ensure universal access to immunization by 2020. National Immunization Programme is one of the key interventions for protection of children from life threatening conditions, which are preventable by vaccination.

India's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) is one of the largest health programmes of the world, targeting more than 2.67 crore newborns each year. The UIP provides vaccination against 12 Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPD) viz. Diphtheria, Pertusis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Rubella, severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Rotavirus diarrhoea, Hepatitis B, Meningitis & Pneumonia caused by Haemophilus influenzae type B and Pneumococcal Pneumonia. These vaccines are provided free of cost to the children.

In the last few years, the State has achieved significant progress in immunization coverage. The State is now focusing on sustained improvement in universal immunization coverage so that every child and pregnant woman is protected against Vaccine Preventable Diseases as per the National Immunization Schedule.
